Cheryl Jackson has a shoe collection many women would die for, but the Plano woman is voluntarily parting with high-priced pair after pair.  She's preparing to sell them to the highest bidder on EBay.  Jackson says, "The holidays are coming up, you know with the economy going the way it is, if I have anything in my closet that can give me money and I don't have to spend money, that's ideal for me."

And for others, apparently.  David Goldstein owns 3 "I Sold It" on Ebay stores.  His business jumped more than 50 percent from October to November.

David Goldstein says, "People are trying to simplify their lives.  They're trying to de clutter.  They've much more conscious now of recycling things they're no longer using.  Of getting rid of some of the excess.  That's kind of what this economy is about.  Getting rid of the excess."

Goldstein says a lot of people are bringing in items they want to replace this holiday season, like digital cameras or skis.  Other people are simply, trying to cash in on the unwanted.  That's Donna Vesel, a single mother who today became a first time Ebay seller.  She says the few hundred dollars she hopes to get for her gold jewelry is already earmarked for bills.  Donna Vesel says, "It seemed like a pretty good way to make a little bit of spending money and with the economy the way it is, you make your money the way you can."

Dona Vesel says she wouldn't know how to sell it herself on EBay.  Cheryl Jackson doesn't want to.  Jackson says, "If I were to do it myself, I would have to box it up, ship it to the person and take time to respond.  I don't have time to do that."

Jackson says letting a professional do the heavy lifting is worth pocketing only 60 percent of the sales price.  She says, "40 percent of what's sitting in here and 60 percent going in my pocket and I haven't done anything but handed them something that I wasn't going to use before.. Absolutely I'd do it everyday."

Is eBay an economic barometer? PDF Print E-mail

Individuals, businesses putting more merchandise on auction Web site, and quality, value still sell in down times.  The stock market may have plunged 15 percent in October. Housing prices may be 26 percent below a year ago. And economists at Cal State Fullerton and UCLA may use words like "grim" in describing Orange County's economy in the near future.  But not every business is down.

"August was my best month ever. September was up 60 percent over a year earlier and October was up 30 percent," said Scott Brown.  Wow! Get me into whatever Brown is doing.  He owns an iSold It franchise in Fullerton that sells on eBay auction Web site items brought in by individuals and businesses.

Charity Auction of Museums Teddy Bears to Benefit Childrens Center, Naples, Fla.

The Full Story:

The YMCA is proud to announce the ongoing eBay auctions of collectible teddy bears to benefit the new YMCA Gaynor Child Development Center, on the former site of the Naples Teddy Bear Museum. The Museum, founded by local resident and philanthropist Frances Pew Hayes, closed its doors in 2005 after Mrs. Hayes passed away.

According to Tim Luke of Treasure Quest Appraisal Group, “The collection from the Naples Teddy Bear Museum showcased the creativity and craftsmanship of teddy bear artists and manufacturers from around the world. The collection spans time periods of manufacturing but has a high concentration in contemporary bears and overall is in excellent condition. It is very appropriate that the proceeds of this auction will provide children with the needed facility and services, proving once again teddy bears can make a difference in a child’s life.”

The auction of the teddy bears is being handled by the Naples iSOLD It eBay Store. The best way to find these teddy bears on eBay is to search in eBay using the search terms NAPLES TEDDY BEAR. You can also find the collection through eBay using the seller's id: isoldit.fl0121. The bears will be added to eBay at 10-20 per day, so please keep checking the website.

The Washington Post
Published: October 12, 2008

WASHINGTON - Patricia Ohlemiller packed up her Edmund Scientific Astroscan telescope recently and headed to the Gaithersburg, Md., iSold It eBay drop-off center. She hoped to recoup $150, minus commission, of its original $350 value.
Planning to retire next year and worried about putting her house on the market, Ohlemiller said, "I'd rather sell stuff I don't need and get the cash."

Colleen Magro dragged a heavy box to the Bethesda, Md., offices of Sloans & Kenyon Auctioneers and Appraisers a couple of weeks ago for appraisal day. Inside were carefully wrapped Chinese ceramics and Brazilian sculptures set with semi-precious stones that she hoped to consign.

"I was laid off in December," Magro said. "I need money. I thought I'd have a job by now."
It's too late to dump Fannie Mae stock, but you can still dump that Marie Osmond doll, David Yurman bracelet or Krups espresso machine in its original box. With financial markets in perpetual meltdown, a growing number of people anxious about jobs, savings and retirement are looking over their living room shelves, storage units, attics and safety deposit boxes for items they no longer use or like. They're contacting online sellers, consignment shops and auctioneers about unloading the unwanted possessions.

"People are selling coins their grandfather gave them for gas money," says Nicholas Pyle, an eBay trading assistant based in Washington, D.C., who has been getting panicked calls. Listings on eBay have increased 19 percent in the past year, and overall revenue has grown 13 percent, spokeswoman Jenny Baragary said.

Classified ads for furniture and household items on Craigslist are up nearly 100 percent from last year, spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best said in an e-mail.

Will the economic crisis force Americans to examine overstuffed closets and rethink the longtime mantra to "collect 'em all"?

Daniel Nissanoff is the author of "FutureShop: How to Trade Up to a Luxury Lifestyle Today," about how online shopping affects consumer culture. He says buying and selling branded goods secondhand has become socially acceptable.

"The Internet did not exist in prior down cycles," he said. "Now you can truly liquidate your material possessions and create money."

September was the biggest month for sales this year at the Gaithersburg iSold It eBay store. Open seven days a week, the store hosts a parade of suburbanites clutching Hummel figurines, Thomas Kinkade paintings, Redskins tickets and Coach handbags.

Owner Mike Hadad said: "A year ago, someone might have been selling something to upgrade to the latest model. Now it's because they can use the money for bills."
